Table of contents

Weeping Creek Valley is the first open region of Phantom Blade Zero and the place where Soul learns the fundamentals of combat. After the scripted prologue fight against Zuo Shang, the valley introduces parrying, perfect dodging, weapon switching and Phantom Edges in a relatively forgiving setting. It is also packed with optional content that is easy to walk past on a first visit, including two hidden bosses and one of the game's best early weapons. This guide summarises what the region contains and where to look, using public sources only.

Weeping Creek Valley at a glance

The AllThings. How interactive map tracks 20 bells, 8 boss markers and 7 chests in Weeping Creek Valley. Bells are checkpoints and upgrade stations, so unlocking every one makes backtracking much faster. Boss markers include optional fights as well as story bosses, and chests are where many accessories and upgrade materials are hidden. You can tick these off on our interactive map and the collectibles checklist.

Bosses and how to approach them

Jagged Steel, the Frenzied Brute is the introductory boss. PCGamesN describes it as a teaching fight with on-screen prompts for parrying and perfect dodging; follow them and you will win. Defeating it gives you the Jagged Steel weapon, which applies bleed and remains useful for many hours.

Peng Meng, the Axemaster is the first real test. Avoid his back slam, which empties your Sha-Chi, dodge his sweep and parry the blue attack after his stamps. Read the full Peng Meng guide.

Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet is a hidden, optional boss. PCGamesN notes you cannot really fight it early: Soul remarks that he needs to learn more, and the puppet is extremely tanky. Come back near the end of the game, when it becomes easy. Dodge as she moves between mirrors and watch for a red attack when she emerges.

Hua, Deadly Betrothed is hidden at the bottom of the region's first Sha-Chi tower. Keep moving so you are not caught in the flowers she places on the ground. She drops the Scarlet Wraithblade, which PCGamesN rates as one of the best weapons of the first half of the game.

The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe ends the chapter at the Great Waterfall. See our The Hunt guide.

You will also meet the Gold Masked One here for the first of five optional encounters. PCGamesN advises staying alert for his quick red flash attacks. These fights tie into the Lóng Pillars; the first Lóng Pillar is in Weeping Creek Valley and is unlocked with a Sha-Chi tower key, according to games.gg. See our Lóng Pillar guide.

Tips for this region

  • Do not leave the Outpost without grabbing the Sanguine Reach from the weapon rack behind the forge.
  • The Feather Bow is earned through a small favour: take the Broken String Bow from the chest near Ruthless Archer Camp to the archer on the rooftop at the Outpost.
  • Reflex Device, which widens parry and perfect dodge windows by fifteen percent, sits near the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Base and is an excellent early pick for newer players.
  • Explore the Sha-Chi tower carefully; the hidden opening leads to Hua, Deadly Betrothed.
  • Pick up every Memory Flower you see. G2A explains that completing memory sets raises your health.
