Phantom Blade Zero is a fast, parry-focused action RPG, and the first few hours can feel overwhelming. These tips are drawn from published guides and boss breakdowns. They focus on the habits that make the biggest difference early on. For the core mechanics in more depth, also read our beginner guide.

Combat

1. Blue means parry, red means dodge

Across PCGamesN's boss breakdowns and games.gg's Gold-Masked One tips, the rule is consistent: parry blue flashes and perfect dodge red flashes. Red attacks cannot be blocked safely.

2. Know the exceptions

games.gg notes that against the Gold-Masked One you should block his red sword waves at range, and dodge black or black-and-white attacks because blocking them empties your Sha-Chi. Read each boss's guide for its quirks.

3. Sha-Chi is your shield

Sha-Chi is the resource used for blocking and heavy combos, as Wikipedia's mechanics summary explains. If it runs out, you are Guard-Broken and open to big damage.

4. Swap weapons to refill Sha-Chi

games.gg points out that switching between your two main weapons quickly refills Sha-Chi. Swapping is not just for variety; it is a defensive tool.

5. Break guards, then punish

Most of your big damage comes after an enemy is Guard-Broken. PCGamesN repeatedly advises waiting for the break rather than chasing health bars, especially on shielded bosses like Zhuo Bi.

6. Bring a shield breaker

Several early fights, such as Ying Ye and Zhuo Bi, punish weapons with weak guard breaking. PCGamesN suggests carrying a shield-breaking weapon.

7. Use lock-on against fast bosses

PCGamesN recommends staying locked on against quick, teleporting bosses such as Bai Chilian so you can see the colour of incoming attacks.

Settings

8. Choose difficulty without guilt

th.gl shows Wayfarer gives a 10-frame parry and 14-frame dodge window, against 8 and 6 on Hellwalker. You can switch outside combat at any time. See difficulty modes.

Builds and gear

9. Grab the Reflex Device

AllThings. How lists it in Weeping Creek Valley: +15% parry and perfect dodge windows.

10. Pair a damage weapon with the Outlaw Warblade

games.gg recommends the Warblade from Ying Ye as a second weapon for healing. See the beginner build.

11. Focus your upgrades

Remnant Dust is limited, and the PBZ Wiki says there is no respawning farm. Upgrade one weapon and one Phantom Edge rather than many. Upgrade materials can be refunded at the forge, per games.gg. See Remnant Dust farming.

Exploration

12. Read and loot everything

White smoke pickups, chests, scrolls and books all give Remnant Dust, per the PBZ Wiki.

13. Touch every Lóng Pillar

games.gg says touching the first pillar starts Bloodline Awakening. You can leave a duel and come back later. See Lóng Pillar locations.

14. Do side quests early

Side quests have cut-offs tied to story doors. Read the missable items guide and the true ending guide before Pangzhen's Green Serpent House door.

15. Collect Memory Flowers

They are the main way to raise max HP, but only complete sets count. See Memory Flowers.

Early boss order

Your first real tests are Peng Meng, The Hunt, Hua Qianxiao and Bai Chilian. The full list is in all bosses in order. Plan your gear in the build planner and track pickups on the map.
