Table of contents
Phantom Blade Zero offers four difficulty settings: Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker and the unlockable 66 Days. The differences are not just enemy health. The game also changes how much Sha-Chi (posture) enemies have and, crucially for a parry-heavy action game, how many frames you get to parry and perfect dodge. This guide summarises the numbers published by the th.gl database and explains which mode suits which player.
The modifier table
The th.gl guide lists these values relative to the baseline:
- Wayfarer: enemy health ×0.8, enemy attack ×0.7, enemy Sha-Chi ×0.5, enemy Sha-Chi attack ×0.33. Parry window 10 frames, perfect dodge window 14 frames.
- Pathbreaker: enemy health ×0.8, enemy Sha-Chi attack ×0.66, other values at baseline. Parry window 8 frames, perfect dodge window 12 frames.
- Hellwalker: baseline enemy values. Parry window 8 frames, perfect dodge window only 6 frames.
- 66 Days: Hellwalker's values with a 6-frame parry window and a 6-frame dodge window, plus a death limit.
In practice, Wayfarer is dramatically more forgiving: enemies hit for less, break faster and give you a much wider defensive window. Pathbreaker keeps damage at full strength but still gives a little extra health and timing slack. Hellwalker removes most of the dodge slack.
Switching difficulty
According to th.gl, you can switch between Wayfarer, Pathbreaker and Hellwalker freely outside combat. That means you can play most of the game on Hellwalker and drop down for a single boss that is giving you trouble, or the reverse. Nothing is locked out by doing so.
Phantom Blade Guide reports that director Soulframe Liang said every trophy can be earned on any of the first three difficulties, even entirely on Wayfarer. Difficulty choice therefore does not affect the platinum; see our trophy guide.
66 Days
66 Days is a separate challenge. th.gl describes it as unlocking after you finish the game, and Phantom Blade Guide specifies a clear on Pathbreaker or Hellwalker. Key rules:
- It uses Hellwalker values with the tightest timing windows.
- Each rebirth (death) costs one day out of sixty-six.
- The difficulty cannot be changed during that run.
- Running out of days gives the special Undying Grudge ending, explained in our endings guide.
Because every death matters, collecting Memory Flowers for extra health and building a lifesteal-friendly loadout become much more valuable on this mode.
New Cycle and Wayfarer
th.gl notes that Wayfarer is not offered when starting a New Cycle, so later cycles begin on Pathbreaker or higher. Enemy and weapon scaling across cycles is covered in the New Game Plus guide.
Which mode should you pick?
- New to the genre, or here for the story: Wayfarer. The wider windows let you learn the parry and dodge system without frustration, and you lose nothing in rewards or trophies.
- Comfortable with action games: Pathbreaker. It feels like the intended experience while keeping a bit of timing slack.
- Veterans of Sekiro-style parry games: Hellwalker. The 6-frame dodge window means you will rely more on parrying.
- Challenge seekers after a clear: 66 Days.
Tips for any difficulty
- Learn which flash colours to parry and which to dodge; our beginner tips explain the rules.
- Upgrade one main weapon early with Remnant Dust; see Remnant Dust farming.
- If a boss is a wall, drop the difficulty for one attempt to learn its moves at a slower pace, then switch back.
- Check our boss guides, such as Bai Chilian and Lei Dang, for specific patterns.
